Description
We are very pleased to offer bidders/buyers a chance to own an important piece of Broadway theater history.  Here, we are showing an original work of art from the musical FOLLIES.   FOLLIES was produced in 1972 with a book by James Goldman and a score by the musical theater's most prolific composer, Stephen Sondheim.  The production won eight Tony awards and continues to captivate people around the world.  Their devotion to the piece has put fans of the musical in a class of their own.    One of the most memorable aspects of the original production were the costumes by Florence Klotz.  The great artist won a Tony for this production (as well as five others for PACIFIC OVERTURES, GRIND, KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN, SHOW BOAT and A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC).  She was also responsible for costuming the cultishly loved ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY.    This costume rendering shows Klotz's first sketch for (young) Phyllis Rogers in the "confrontation" scene of the play.  The costume went through a couple of stages and, at one time, it was tried in black as well.  The design in black is also a part of this sale, with the white dress being drawn and painted on white art paper and the black version painted on onionskin tracing paper and folded over one side, so that both presentations can be seen together.  In later sketches, the costume was refined to include black piping on lapels and a lace up front on the belt, as can be seen in the attached photograph.  The fact that this is an early version of the dress makes the sketch even more special and rare.   Winnnig bid will pay a shipping fee of fifteen dollars.  The artwork will be packed in sturdy materials and shipped Priority Mail with insurance, delivery confirmation and signature requirement.  International buyers pay a shipping fee of twenty USA dollars.   If you are a fan of this musical, the composer, the designer, this may be your only chance to own a rare piece in the history of American Musical Theater.   Get it now.
