Description
Current Lot 1964 Beatles Signed Publicity Photo - Lennon Heartthrobs individually, as well as in quartet form, Rock & Roll's revolutionary Beatles were fanatically sought by the eyes and ears of millions the globe over. So, imagine what it was like to be a teenage girl circa 1964 and to have secured tickets to The Scala Theatre-a London auditorium that played host to the "Fab Four" in March of that year during the filming of A Hard Day's Night. Ah, but wait ... let the mind wander a bit more and consider what it might have been like to have had clutched the very black-and-white promotional photo offered here-and then presented it to John, Paul, George, and Ringo for their autographs. Such is the scenario that played out nearly 45 years ago, as this remarkably well-preserved piece bears the blue ballpoint signatures of "Paul McCartney" ("9") "Ringo Starr" "(8"), and "George Harrison" ("8") as well as a black ballpoint scripting by "John Lennon" ("7"). With the exception of McCartney, each bandmate also added "XXX" beneath their respective name. The supergroup portrayed in this image was still relatively "tame" not only in appearance, but also in their heartfelt musical message. (The depiction reveals the smiling band members clad in matching, collarless suits-Paul with cigarette in hand-and was captured by renowned photographer Dezo Hoffmann then used it to promote the group's 1963-1964 European Tour.) This item presents at the apparent EX/MT level with superficial surface wrinkles. It rests beneath a custom-made mat board and is housed within a 14-3/4" x 17-1/8" frame. Accompanying, as provenance, is a lengthy, handwritten diary entry relating the day's events. In part, the entry reads, "John was asleep in the front, George was sitting behind him and Ringo & Paul were on the stage. We saw them very clearly as they were relaxing and rehearsing ... at about 12:45 we went into lunch and sat next to the Beatles. I sat next to John. We were unable to speak to them though because a reporter had beaten us to it ... (later) Paul was walking along the back of the auditorium ... Auntie ... went up to him and said ' excuse me Paul but this is my niece Gabrielle and she would like your autograph.' He said of of course ..." The entry continues to explain how Ringo's signature was secured ("... he was very sweet ..."), as well as the remaining two Beatles. A truly rockin' display celebrating the entertainment industry's most acclaimed group, with a gushing (if not well-informed) history of the encounter that created this desirable piece! LOA from Steve Grad & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA.
